I am doing a project for biology about how ecology is related to the population of killer whales (orcas) it is related in a lot of ways keep reading to find out
One way we can help by not polluting the water. when you pollute the water it kill's other fish witch killer whales eat that means the whales wont get food. they might get sick and die. If we see something in the ocean that's trash and not suppose to be there you should pick it up and throw it away. I mean I sometimes don't throw my trash away, but now I know that it is important to throw it away see what we are doing to them:
In the picture above the killer whale didn't get enough food. Adult killer whales eat approximately 3% to 4% of their body weight in food per day. That means they eat 12,000 lbs (5,454.5 kg). Killer whale will consume about 480 lbs (218 kg) of food daily. Fully weaned calves can eat up to approximately 10% of their body weight during growth. So if they don't get the right amount of food they will die. If we pollute the water then the littler fish will die and so will everything that eats it over time because they eat the trash we put in the waters. Killer Whales eat fish, squid, seals, sea lions, walruses, birds, sea turtles, otters, penguins, polar bears, reptiles, sharks, octopus. The killer whale is at the top of the tropic pyramid there one of the top consumers. The killer whales food would get there food from smaller fish and insects. The bigger Animals that the killer whale would eat like sharks and polar bears they would also eat otters, and penguins so they would eat most of the same things that the killer whale would eat. This could effect the whales because if they are looking for a certain thing to eat, lets say they are looking for a polar bear and they can't find any because other things eat the polar bear and polar bears are endangered so is the penguins so if they have less food to eat they can die because they don't get enough food. they might adapt to eating other foods but that would take a couple of years to happen
OIL SPILLS
oil spills kill the whales because the oil will get into there lungs though there blow hole so they can't breath if they cant breath they will die here is a piece of a news paper article about a oil spill: "Compared with some of the world's worst oil spills, the disaster remains small -- the Exxon Valdez which ran aground in 1989 in Alaska dumped 37,000 tonnes of oil into Prince William Sound. the build up of the oil spills over time will cause death because the oil is still in the water it will wash down to other body's of water over time. when you capture the whales to breed them its not helping because they live less then when there in the own habitat because they need there pod to survive because that's they way they live in a pod there family and there not in there habitat which there use to being in and living on there own. when you feed them you need to feed them 3% or 4% of there body weight if they don't get that much they will die after awhile.
WHALING
when people were whaling that decreased the population of the whales.they are doing this to all whales not just killer whales, some country's still allow people to whale. There are pictures on the bottom of the page if you want to see them just be warned there gruesome, so if you don't like seeing blood or dead animals then i would not go see them. if you do look there's a food dish. That's a dish Japan makes with the whale meet
WAYS WE CAN HELP:
THROWING OUR TRASH AWAY
FINDING A WAY TO MAKE ELECTRIC BOATS
STUDYING THERE HABITAT AND WHEN WE CAPTURE THEM CAPTURE THE WHOLE POD
AND MAKING THEM FEEL AT HOME IN THE PLACE YOU PUT THEM
NO WHALING
